Density — Merchant Density
We’ve already compared the density of our Postmates as they are completing deliveries throughout a day in two different markets. In this case, we want to look at how far does food need to travel to get to our customers. In other words, how densely distributed are our merchants.
Demand — Growth
Postmates has been growing like a rocketship since the first delivery was completed in late 2011. The chart below shows weekly completed deliveries since first launching, not cumulative. This curve can be kind of tricky to really understand, because if we looked at this same chart at the same point in time last year, the shape would be incredibly similar. We start to get used to this shape.
Demand — Stereo Location
Averages are strange things. You’ll often hear statistics-minded people say that averages are dangerous since they can paint an incorrect picture when describing a group. Maybe you’ve heard the example of calculating the average net worth of a group of 100 people when one of them is Bill Gates (or Jeff Bezos).
Density — Postmate Density
It’s not news that no two cities are the same. There are so many different ways to compare cities, walkability, public transportation, food, culture, demographics, size, density, history, etc etc. We have a lot of data on a lot of those different things, but we’re going to focus on size and density right now. Let’s just look at San Francisco and Miami.
Demand — Regions
Four is a pretty common number in music and in life in general. There are four cardinal directions, there were four Beatles, I bet the building you’re sitting in has four sides, the most common time signature in popular music is 4/4 (it’s even called common time), there are four horsemen of the apocalypse, but my favorite is that there are four orchestral string instruments.
Trends — Historical Items
We know every single item that’s ever been ordered and delivered on Postmates. We’ve also been around for a while, so we have a pretty good sense of what items are gaining and losing popularity over time. Let’s take a look at a few items as an example.
Trends — Categories
Figuring out the most popular food in America isn’t as straightforward as you might expect for a company that primarily delivers food. We’ve been growing like crazy, so naively looking at the ranks of our food categories is actually capturing things outside of what we’d typically expect.
Trends — Alcohol Seasonality
People’s preferences for alcohol don’t stay the same throughout a year. It makes sense, it feels slightly weird to be at a 4th of July BBQ with a glass of cabernet. And there are holidays specifically centered around specific types of alcohol, New Years, Cinco de Mayo, etc.
Audiorders: The Sonification of On-Demand — Trends
Postmates has been the go-to for ordering basically anything since 2011. In the 9+ years we’ve been operating, we’ve seen our customers order a lot. Through every craving-filled order, midnight snack, or panic-induced emergency toilet paper run, we shared a journey together.
