Gotsa Tsitska Tsolikouri

The Gotsadze Family tradition of making wine began with my grandfather Konstantin Gotsadze (1860-1940). Today it continues with my wife Nina, our children and I. The cellar is 1300 meters above sea level in Kiketi; the very place where Georgian Kings had their favorite wines vinified. Grapes which are farmed in our family owned vineyards in the Asureti Valley below are brought to our mountain cellar. The cool temperature allows for a delicately controlled fermentation and aging that expresses the distinctive character of each grape variety and our land. All our wines are fermented with wild yeast, in ancient traditional kvevri: large buried earthenware amphora, and bottled unfiltered. We are proud to offer this expression of our tradition and family.

Glekhuri, Kisi Qvevri

According to Decanter Magazine it is the first Georgian qvevri wine to make an appearance in our Best In Show selection is based on the Kisi variety, and is made in Georgia's leading region of Kakheti. Its deep amber colour tells you immediately that this has had extensive skin contact - as does its extraordinary aromatic profile of apples stored in an attic, of roses hung up to dry, of the straw in which cheese has been aged, of cheese curds themselves, of quince paste and of exotic mushrooms. After that, you're expecting something unique, and you won't be disappointed: this is textured and full, resonant and expressive with those aromatic allusions, yet, significantly, spotlessly clear and precise too. It has fresher acidity than many Kakheti examples, and would accompany food superbly. One last flavour note to look out for is particularly significant at table: its mouth-watering umami.

Vinoterra, Mtsvane

This mtsvane, the most impressive Georgian wine we tasted for this issue, a rich, golden wine that continued to reveal new details over the course of a week without losing steam. What started as a plump, generous mouthful of spicy golden fruit became a trip into cool, stony fields filled with saline, herbal notes—notes that the tasters on our panel who’ve been to Georgia identified as wild capers and salted linden flowers. Even for those of us who have no idea what those things taste like, the wine is compellingly vivid, with a structure and complexity that’s universally appreciable.

Saperavi, meaning “something to color with,” is Georgia’s leading red grape variety. A very old variety, it is Georgia’s most widely planted red grape. Saperavi can be dry, semisweet, full-on sweet, or fortied. Regardless of how produced, this tenturier variety gives wines that are inky, often fully opaque, with aromas of dark berries, licorice, grilled meat, tobacco, chocolate and spices. Texturally, the wine is sappy and tannic, with considerable acidity.
