A beloved Lithuanian classic made with grated potatoes, smoky bacon, onions, eggs, and creamy evaporated milk — slow-baked until golden, crisp on the edges, and tender inside. Served warm with a generous spoon of sour cream.
Simple, rich, and soul-satisfying — a true comfort dish.
Now About That Name…
We know — you can spell it many different ways. But hey, we’re the Black Sheep, after all!
The word “Kugela” is kind of the rebel cousin of “Kugel” and “Kugelis” — and depending on who you ask (or what grandma you’re talking to), you might see it spelled as:
🥔 Kugel – the classic Jewish baked noodle or potato casserole
🥔 Kugelis – Lithuania’s national potato dish (our inspiration!)
🥔 Kigl / Kigel / Kugl / Kugla – all real, all regional, all correct… probably
🥔 Bulvių plokštainis or Banda – for when you really want to impress your Lithuanian friends
No matter how you spell it, it still tastes like home — crispy, creamy, and unapologetically delicious.
